'Greed' to audition student trivia buffs

Money-hungry University students soon will get a chance to satisfy their financial appetites.

The Fox quiz game show "Greed" will visit Charlottesville tomorrow in search of contestants for its upcoming "College Rivalry Week." A trip to Los Angeles and up to $2 million in prize money will be at stake.

"Greed" wants to choose up to four University students to compete on the air with other ACC students against teams from the Ivy League, Pac-10, and Big Ten conferences, according to Head Contestant Coordinator Hayley Blain.

Ruby Tuesday's restaurant on Emmet Street will host auditions at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday. Only those who pass an initial qualifying quiz will move on to a personality interview and a mock game.

Blain and her staff then will select contestants, who will tape the show mid-April in Los Angeles. In addition to any prize money, winners will receive 60 minutes of fame when the show airs in early May.

Carolyn Black, University Union chairwoman for comedy and variety, said she looks forward to the tryouts.

"I think it gives students an opportunity to do something fun," Black said.

It also is possible that "College Rivalry Week" will become an annual event. "If they like the way this year goes, they said they would do it again next year," she said.

The show challenges contestants to climb the "Tower of Greed" by answering quiz questions to win increasing amounts of money.

But before reaching that stage, each contestant must answer a qualifying question, which eliminates one player and determines a team captain.

Once the pot for a team hits $200,000, the plot thickens. Before each question, "The Terminator" randomly chooses a contestant who may challenge another member of his own team for that player's share of the winnings. Blain hinted that University players might be able to play out their ACC rivalries with terminator questions.

She described the game to University Union as the University's "big chance to get back at" ACC rival University of North Carolina.

Black said she hopes students take advantage of the prizes "Greed" has to offer, and Blain said "Greed"'s staff hopes to audition many University candidates.

"We might just love you," she said.

Anyone who wants to audition must be a University student with a valid student identification card.
