Stoker succombs to leukemia after year of cancer treatment

University student Megan Stoker, a resident of Colonial Heights, Va., passed away last Friday after battling leukemia for over a year.

Stoker, an English major and history minor, performed with the Virginia Sil'hooettes, an all-female a capella group. She was also a contributor to theangle.com, an online student publication.

Stoker was described as a vibrant person who loved attending the University.

She was "deeply involved with music and theater," said Darryl Stoker, Megan's father. "She loved the University and everything about it."

Darryl Stoker said the Sil'hooettes planned to perform at Megan's memorial service, held last night at St. Ann Catholic Church in Colonial Heights.

Megan would have graduated this May.

Fourth-year College student Anna Robertson said she knew Stoker well during her time at the University.

Robertson recalled Stoker's "great sense of humor" and said she will likely be remembered as someone who was fun-loving and greatly talented in all her endeavors.

Stoker was "very ambitious and infectious with her happiness," Robertson said.

She said Stoker displayed tremendous courage during her battle with cancer.

Stoker learned of her condition in December 1998 and underwent a bone-marrow transplant.

Robertson said Stoker had begun to recover, but learned that her cancer had recurred about three weeks ago.

Robertson said Stoker's physicians relocated her original bone-marrow donor and were planning to perform another procedure, when Stoker contracted an infection.

Stoker's family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Leukemia Society of America, Richmond Area Office, 5001 W. Broad St., Suite 226, Richmond, Va., 23230.
