Council upholds 12 Appropriations allocations

Two of the 14 Contracted Independent Organizations that appealed for more funding from Student Council got what they asked for at Tuesday's hearing, which lasted until early Wednesday morning.

Council's Appropriations Committee granted the Virginia Club Ice Hockey team and CAINE, a comic book and animation organization, more Student Activity Fee money than the Committee originally allocated.

The Committee originally gave CAINE a zero allocation and hockey $11,832. CAINE now has an additional $778.50 and hockey has $2,000 more, bringing its total appropriation to $13,832.

Twenty-one CIOs appealed the Appropriations Committee's initial funding decisions, which were released April 14.

The seven CIOs that did not appeal at Tuesday's hearing will come before Council at a special meeting tonight.

The Committee, which holds the purse strings of the SAF fund, allocated a total of $450,072 to 158 CIOs. The SAF is a $39 fee each student pays each year in addition to tuition.

Several of the appeals were withdrawn after the Committee discovered mistakes in its original decisions.

Women's Club Tennis withdrew its appeal after the Committee conceded that the CIO needed additional funds for two trips the group will take that are over 500 miles away. The Committee gave it $3,196 - $766 more than its original $2,430 allocation.

Other groups withdrew their appeals after getting compensated for some of the money requested in their appeal, following Committee mistakes.

These groups include Women's Rugby, the University Dance Club, the Black Business Students Forum and the Hong Kong Student Association.

Council did not grant any additional money to the Chinese Students and Scholars Society, the American Society for Civil Engineers, the Film and Media Society, the Vietnamese Students' Association or Men's Rugby.

Vice President for Organizations-elect Kelly Harris said she felt the Committee did an effective job in the allocation of SAF funds.

"The Appropriations Committee did a really good job addressing the concerns of the groups and reaching a satisfactory compromise," Harris said.

But Chief Financial Officer John Finley said he felt many of the appeals were unwarranted.

Finley said he was disappointed that so many CIOs found the Committee's rules unfair when they were applied to their group.

"That groups come before us and argue that the rules should apply to everyone else but not them is laughable," he said.

Groups that still are not pleased with Council's decisions may appeal to the Student Activities Committee.

Student Council adjourned at 2 a.m. yesterday morning.
