College develops new position for research

In an effort to reorganize the College administration, plans are underway to hire an associate dean for graduate programs and research - a new position.

Robert J. Huskey, associate dean for graduate studies, recently announced his resignation, effective in January. The new position will combine his current duties with leadership of research programs, said Adam Daniel, assistant to College Dean Melvyn P. Leffler. Huskey has worked as an associate dean since 1982.

Leffler wanted toredistribute these duties for a long time, but Huskey's resignation served as the catalyst for doing so, Daniel said.

The redistribution comes as part of a larger effort by Leffler to reconfigure some of the structure of the College administration, Daniel said.

Leffler will leave his current position as dean at the end of this academic year to take a position at Oxford.

University President John T. Casteen III said reasons for restructuring the design of the College center around students and fundraising initiatives.

Other universities have designed structures that effectively protect students against becoming just a number in a large system of students, and fundraising for specific disciplines often proves more effective than doing so for an entire school, Casteen said.

Now Huskey and Assoc. Dean for Administration Richard Sundberg share responsibility for research programs.

"All of these research tasks are going to one person," Daniel said.

The distribution of research responsibilities evolved over time into what they are now, he said.

Because graduate programs and research opportunities are so intertwined, it makes sense to have one individual coordinating both efforts, rather than two separate positions, Sundberg said.

"Such a person will be a key player in trying to look for opportunities that can help graduate and research programs," he said.

He added the new dean will be responsible for both promoting new research programs and evaluating ones in which the University participates.

Sundberg said research opportunities can benefit both graduate and undergraduate College students.

College administrators have not decided yet whether the candidate search will focus on internal or external applicants.

The decision will depend upon which method administrators believe will reap the best field of candidates for the position.

Daniel said the finalized job description has not been completed yet.

The College tentatively hopes the new associate dean will begin working by the end of June, he said.

The new dean could enter the job sooner, because it is such an important position, he added.
