Duke's alcohol task force ends programs

Because of low attendance, Duke University's alcohol task force has suspended school-sponsored non-alcoholic events.

Six weekly alcohol-free parties featuring movies, comedians and local bands were planned; the last two have been cancelled.

Even so, the task force plans on resuming these events in the future.

"We are putting a group of student leaders together to make recommendations on how we might reconsider these events," said Sue Wasiolek, assistant vice president of student affairs.

Students will continue to receive funding to plan future activities.

"We are going to work to best utilize our resources," Wasiolek said.

Senior Jim Lazarus, overseer of the activities, said the planning committee most likely will give the money to other student groups who will hold similar, non-alcoholic events.

The vice president of student affairs must approve the plan before the task force can implement it.

The planning committee for alcohol-free events had scheduled events for a total of six weeks but held only three of the events before suspending the series.

Two of the remaining three will be suspended, while the third function will continue through another student group's planning.

Rain, poor advertising and special circumstances surrounding each specific day also played into the attendance rate, Lazarus said.

"There was actually one weekend that had great attendance, one that had mediocre and one that had low. We suspended the events so that we can reevaluate which way to use the funding," he said.

"There were only two or three of us that ended up planning the events. We weren't able to do enough," he added.

Eight students submitted the original proposal for the series last summer to the vice president of student affairs.

The activities for the last three weekends were planned according to this proposal.

So far, the events have used about $28,000 from a total available fund of $64,750.
