Make a Difference at Dinner
When state Sen. Emily Couric (D-Charlottesville) was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last July, 2000 College graduate Joshua Scott wanted to find a way to honor her.
He found his answer with the Make a Difference Day organization, committed to improving local communities. Tonight the group will hold a dinner fundraiser at Farmington Country Club to raise money for the University Cancer Center.
The money will specifically benefit the Patient and Family Support Fund, which provides ongoing services and supplies for cancer patients and their families. Couric will close the evening with a keynote address.
Over 300 people are expected to attend the dinner fundraiser, including area delegates and University figures such as Vice President of Student Affairs William W. Harmon.
"It will be a nice mix of folks from the Charlottesville community and the University community," Scott said.
At a donation of $1,000 per table, Make a Difference Day has already raised about $40,000. Scott said the organization has received support from several University departments, especially from the department of medicine.
The date designated as Make a Difference Day normally occurs nationwide Oct. 28, but the University chapter decided to extend their reach to sponsor this event.
"Couric embodies the spirit of Make a Difference Day," Scott said. "This dinner shows that it can be Make a Difference Day year-round."
