Rock around the clock
While students boogied, bopped and twisted the night away last Saturday at Dance Marathon, the University's radio station, WTJU (91.1 FM), held its own 24-hour rock-a-thon.
The station began its annual Rock Marathon on Friday, and will continue it through the wee hours of next Saturday morning. The weeklong event features special programming and live in-studio performances by local rock bands Ostinata, Engine Down and Last Days of May.
"It's a celebration of this sort of [rock] music, and we fundraise at the same time to support the station," said Chuck Taylor, WTJU's general manager.
Like many college radio stations, WTJU-FM caters to a wide variety of musical tastes. The station plays jazz, blues, rock, hip-hop, R&B, international and classical music.
Engine Down will perform in-studio on Tuesday at 7 p.m., and Last Days of May will perform at 8 p.m. Friday.
The marathon is one of four such fundraising events that will occur annually.
The station hopes to earn at least $18,000 by the end of the marathon Friday and has a yearly fundraising goal of $80,000.
The timing of the Rock Marathon is important, Taylor said.
"We try to do it before Spring Break, when everyone goes away and spends their money," he added.
