Sometimes you feel like a nut
Yesterday, the Lawn was nuts. Nestled between tables for the Academical Village People and Students Without Borders, a new and worthy cause emerged: National Pistachio Day.
"We're spreading smiles through pistachios," said second-year College student Will Winters, a member of the newly formed People for Pistachios organization, which handed out informational flyers and pistachio samples to passersby.
"They are one of the most underappreciated nuts out there," said third-year College student Ross Kane, one of the founders of PFP.
Third-year College student Dylan Rosenthal, a PFP co-founder, explained that pistachios bring people together.
"There is something inherent about pistachios that makes them social," Rosenthal said. "The shelling encourages conversation."
"Peanuts are a more solitary food," added Tim Starr, a third-year College student and PFP member.
Rosenthal and Kane found out about National Pistachio Day from the Web site eatethnic.com, which also features information on National Tortilla Chip Day and National Pancake Week. Their common love for pistachios prompted them to bring the celebration to the University.
In addition to the flyers and free samples, Rosenthal hosted a pistachio party at his apartment in Bice last night, complete with pistachio pudding.
Rosenthal and Kane said they hope to make pistachio appreciation a year-round phenomenon.
"Pistachios make people happy," Kane said.
Added Starr: "It's a quality nut."
