Pepsi and Britney: Hitting you one time too many

A can of Pepsi: 50 cents.

Hiring 100 steroid-induced male dancers: $300.

The joy of Britney: Priceless.

Just in time for Derby Days, Britney is back with her killer moves and killer abs.

No longer must you gentlemen sacrifice sleep while enduring all-night music television vigils to catch the talented Ms. Spears telling you just how strong she really is and just how versatile your dining room chair can be.

The advertising executives at PepsiCo are giving MTV a run for its money (and young men a run to their televisions) with their newest Pepsi ad. Gone are the days of "Be Young, Have Fun, Drink Pepsi."

Britney is here to stay in yet another array of provocative outfits. Ironically, the ad ends not with a shot of Britney looking over her shoulder with her "natural" blonde hair, but with the Pepsi logo and the words, "the Joy of Pepsi."

If any viewers are pondering the "joy" of Pepsi at this moment, will you please raise your hands? My point exactly.

I saw this television ad for the first time at Arch's on Monday. My first thought was: "I bet that cost Pepsi a small fortune."

My second thought came while I was alternating my gaze between Britney's perfectly toned abdominal muscles and my large cup of Black Caesar frozen yogurt. Hence, the second thought: "Britney probably doesn't do Arch's."

With all the sorority pledges working hard to prepare for their big moment at Friday's Derby Days dance competition, Britney and Pepsi could not have united at a better time.

Look past the insulting notion that anyone would choose a product based solely on the fact that Britney Spears shook her bon-bon for it. This is not an insult, ladies! It clearly is inspiration. Please put down your Arch's cup and think it over.

All this talk of Britney Spears and Derby Days may have given you a headache by this point. Or it might just be that you've consumed one Pepsi too many since you last saw the ad on television, and the caffeine overload caused you to experience a tremendous migraine.

Either way, if you feel the need to escape for the weekend, the third-year class has just the thing for you: a weekend in Boston.

(Unfortunately, they do have MTV and several major TV stations there, as well as Pepsi in their vending machines, but try to overlook that.)

Tonight at 7:30, the University Suitcase Party 2001 might just give you an excuse to pack up and leave this one-cola town.

The spontaneity of such a trip might just be the very thing needed to pull you out of your rut and rejuvenate your sense of adventure. A chauffeured limousine and a night in a local hotel can't hurt either. This is the very star-treatment that you-know-who receives on a daily basis.

Although a weekend trip to Beantown would mean you'd miss the Derby Days dance-off, we have established that you can see plenty of dancing on your television screen.

The bad news is that it is starting to seem as if you are unable to leave Britney behind; the good news is that most airlines serve Coke, not Pepsi products during their flights.

Though if you have to stay in Charlottesville for the weekend, it might not be so bad. You will be able to endure the chaos of the Dave Matthews lottery once again, though you might need to take out a student loan to cover the cost of a second show at nearly $50 a pop.

Or there is always the option of devoting several hours to bringing your wool coats and North Face jackets out of storage for this cold snap we seem to be having.

Though, apparently the cold weather has not made an impression on everyone, for I still see the occasional T-shirt and Reef flip-flop.

Mentally, some students never made it back from Cancun. It is hard to imagine how they make it through the day so under-dressed.

But I guess it works for some people. Or at least, while they're enjoying the joy of Britney.
