Two former Virginia stars honored by ACC
Former Virginia tennis standouts Huntley Montgomery and Brian Vahaly were both selected to the ACC 50th Anniversary men's tennis team, announced yesterday by commissioner John Swofford. Montgomery and Vahaly led the Cavalier team in both singles and doubles play from 1998 to 2001.
In doubles, the duo went undefeated in conference play during their freshman season, winning the conference championship. Individually, Montgomery was a three-time all-ACC selection. Vahaly had an equally successful career, earning All-America honors three times and reaching the NCAA singles championship. In his senior season, he compiled an outstanding record of 40-6, and his 40 wins that season still stands as a Virginia record.
Former Cavaliers named to all-time tennis team
Former Virginia standouts Jen Callen and Alison Cohen were both named to the ACC 50th Anniversary women's tennis team, announced yesterday. The two led the women's tennis team during the early and mid 90s.
From 1991-94, Callen was named to the All-ACC team twice and competed in the NCAA singles championships in 1993 and 1994. She compiled a career record of 82-36 in singles play. Cohen, who played at Virginia from 1993-96, was selected to the All-ACC team three times, which is a school record. She won the ACC No. 5 singles title and the No. 2 doubles title in her freshman season. She currently holds the Virginia record for career wins with 107.
