Still looking for that perfect Halloween gift to send home?
How about a U.Va. coffin certificate? It's practical, affordable and full of Halloween spirit.
Thanks to University alumni Bill Hunt and Tom Scott, University spirit now can accompany someone all the way to their deathbed -- and beyond.
Hunt, designer of the official University of Virginia casket, shares with Scott exclusive rights for all college and university caskets across the country.
"We ran an ad on the caskets in June, and they have been growing in success," Hunt said. "Other universities are doing this and many more will be doing it in the future."
WhiteLight, the company with the patent on all casket graphics, has given Hunt and Scott the right to sell university and sport team caskets around the country.
The personalized caskets are perfect for alumni with cherished memories from their University experience, Hunt said.
"The kind of people who have gone to their college reunions, followed the football and basketball games and identified their life with U.Va.," he said. "Perhaps they even met their spouse here."
According to Hunt, the caskets can be purchased at the "medium" price of $2,995 with a $500 tax deductible endowment to the University.
"It ends up being a wonderful opportunity for everybody," Hunt said.
Additionally, customers may specify which school or program at the University they want their donation to go toward.
And ordering a casket is as simple as dialing a 1-800 number in Dallas, Texas. Then, after the person dies, the casket will be delivered overnight -- to any funeral home in the country.
"This is a great program for friends of the University," Hunt said. "It's either this or a plain brown box!"
Suggesting the use of the caskets to honor outstanding faculty members, Seven Society members and contributors to the University, Hunt said there has been a history of need for a product such as this.
"Over the past several years, many alumni have called to request University memorabilia to put in caskets for their loved ones," he said.
Obviously there is a demand for such items. And now people can have spirit on the outside too.
