Three Virginia swimmers were named first-team All-Americans at this weekend's NCAA Championships in Auburn, Ala. and three others received honorable mention recognition. The Cavalier women's swim team finished the meet 13th in the nation.
Senior Mirjana Bosevska was named a first-team All-American in both the 400-yard individual medley and 1650-yard freestyle for the fourth consecutive year after finishing seventh and eighth in her races, respectively. Bosevska also swam a leg of the 800-yard freestyle relay team that garnered honorable mention All-American status for its 11th place finish. The other members of the relay team were freshman Rachel Burk, junior Carlie Dykehouse and senior Cara Lane.
Lane earned the first-team honor after swimming to a second place finish in the 1650-yard, or mile, freestyle race, clocking a school-record 15:53.49. Lane's race was the emotional centerpiece for the Cavalier swimmers this weekend, with teammates lining the side of the pool to cheer her on to the unprecedented performance.
"We were screaming for her every single lap," said freshman Corey Berg, who competed in the 200-yard backstroke on Saturday. "Every team member was there, it was her last race, and it was the most amazing swim I think I've ever seen."
The race may have been a blur of emotion for Lane -- who has two NCAA titles in the event and four consecutive first-team All-America certificates in the 500-yard freestyle -- but she said her teammates' support came through the water loud and clear.
"I had no idea what I was doing," Lane said. "I didn't expect to swim that fast, but it was great to see my teammates cheer me on in my last race ever."
Although tears of joy for a career completed were shed by Lane at the end of the race, this weekend was only the beginning for another of Virginia's first-team All-Americans. Burke also found success in the 1650-yard freestyle, where her seventh place finish earned her the All-American title in her first NCAA Championship.
"Rachel Burke had an amazing swim," Lane said. "I'm excited to watch her over the next few years."
Lane won additional recognition for her 10th place finish in the 400-yard individual medley. Lane was named an honorable mention All-American along with junior Amy Baly, who finished 12th in the race.
Rounding out the corps of Cavalier All-Americans was freshman Brielle White, who won honorable mention status for finishing 12th in the nation in the 100-yard backstroke.
The weekend meet was the culmination of a successful season for a Virginia team that won its first ACC title in four years and finished in the top-15 nationally for the fifth consecutive year.
As for the rest of the NCAA meet, defending champion and host school Auburn again took top honors in the country. Georgia and Southern Cal rounded out the top-three.
Virginia was the top ACC finisher at the meet. Traditional swimming rival UNC was the next highest scoring conference team, taking 17th place in the meet.
