The Cavaliers held the nation's top-scoring field hockey team to three goals below their average, but were unable to turn their defensive success into a win Saturday.
The Virginia defense nearly shut out the Blue Devils in the first half, keeping Duke from finding the cage on the first nine short corners of the game. Virginia was unable to stay strong against a barrage of Blue Devil offense right before the break, however, and Duke scored on its fourth attempt with nine seconds left in the half.
The Blue Devils scored again less than a minute after the break and then a final time 69 seconds later. Down by three, the Cavaliers focused on offense, drawing five short corners and making 10 shots in the second half, twice as many as Duke.
Duke has scored at least four goals in their last nine games except one, and they are averaging six goals a game this season.
