Virginia beat Virginia Tech yesterday afternoon in Richmond 25-9. The match was a part of the "Rumble on the River" tournament. With the win, the Cavaliers improve their record to 5-6 (1-1 ACC) while the Hokies fall to 5-8 (0-3 ACC).The Cavaliers got help from freshmen Ross Gitomer and Kellon Balum, sophomore Mike Sewell and seniors Damian Johnson, Mike Grogan, Kyle Narkiewicz and Scott Smith, who all won their bouts. Gitomer got the win on a forfeit in the 125-pound weight class to give the Cavaliers an early 6-0 advantage. After Virginia Tech cut the Virginia lead in half at 6-3, Virginia went back on the offensive and jumped out to a 13-point lead when Balum, Sewell, Johnson and Grogan all won their bouts. Sophomore Rocco Caponi was upset by Virginia Tech's Steve Borja at 184-pounds in a 5-3 decision. Narkiewicz and Smith followed the upset of Caponi with two wins to secure the victory for the Cavaliers. Virginia's next match comes this weekend in Athens, Ohio, where the team will meet Ohio and Ashland.
