Wigger wins first tournament in career

Senior golfer Leah Wigger hit a six-foot birdie putt Sunday on the first playoff hole to win the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga. The senior beat out Purdue sophomore Maria Hernandez to secure her first tournament victory. Wigger has placed runner-up in tournaments five times in her career, but was unable to attain a first-place finish until yesterday afternoon.

The senior shot a 1-over in both of the first two rounds of the 54-hole tournament but came back yesterday to shoot even par (71) in the final round. Wigger's final score of 215 (2-over) left her tied with Hernandez for the tournament lead. The two then took part in a playoff to determine the champion.

As a team, Virginia came in sixth (902), behind Auburn (881), Florida (892), Arkansas (897), Alabama (898) and Purdue (902).

The Cavaliers play next in the Bryan National Championship in Brown Summit, N.C. April 6-8.
