The Virginia women’s volleyball team started its season off on the right foot this past weekend, winning all three matches on the way to claiming the crown at the JMU Days Inn Invitational in Harrisonburg. After cruising through their first two tests against opponents Murray State and New Hampshire without dropping a single set, the Cavaliers prevailed 3-1 (29-27, 21-25, 25-19, 25-16) in a decisive Saturday night showdown against James Madison.
Virginia showed resilience throughout its match against the Dukes, fighting off two set points to gain the early edge and then rebounding after dropping the second set to finish off its overmatched host with ease in the final two frames. Fifth-year senior Beth Shelton had 19 kills in the pivotal matchup, and sophomore Kendahl Voeckler added 10 more for Virginia, now a perfect 3-0 under the tutelage of first-year head coach Lee Maes. Led by tournament MVP junior Lauren Dickson, the Cavaliers extended their winning streak against James Madison to six straight matches. Virginia seniors Shannon Davis and Marlow Bruneau also joined Dickson on the all-tournament team.
The Cavaliers will hit the road again this weekend, traveling to Colorado for the Denver Pioneer Classic where they will take on the host Pioneers of the University of Denver, as well as Tennessee and Iowa.
