First-year Council

As may have come to your attention, the efforts of Suraj Mishra et al. have earned him office as Vice President of the First-year Council. His was a campaign of determination - one well organized and well executed. Many things ought be admired of his efforts - he managed to make appearance in every first-year dormitory. I believe it was in regards to Vice President Mishra when Woody Allen said that "80% of success is showing up." If nothing else, we have a Vice President that will, in fact, show up - not only in council meetings, but in your very room. And if he does not simply "show-up," then he will jolly-well intrude. Of this we can be sure, through this we can unite as one brother-and-sisterhood - the Class of 2013.

However, I write you all not simply in veneration of my foe, though it may seem that way. I write you to dismiss any feelings failure on our part. Ours was a campaign of character, swaying hearts through sincerity and acknowledgment of the small man - the Jeffersonian way. It is by these virtues that we have acted and by this model that we have succeeded. Like Thomas Edison, we strove and strive yet to achieve something great; but this endeavor will not go unchallenged - this election was one such challenge. Edison explained that "I have not failed, I have simply found 10,000 ways that didn't work." Let this ongoing campaign be characterized by these words. Should we daily walk in such persistence and optimism, then one day, I hold it inevitable that we shall strike our light, and stride the illuminated path of truth towards greatness, united, one body - the Class of 2013.

I conclude with this very hope.

Though it is not I that will lead you this year, my heart is yet vouchsafed to this class - I will serve with no less fortitude and no lack of fervor but simply of more humble stature.
