The Virginia men's basketball team lost 66-49 against South Florida last night in its first road game of the season.
The Bulls (2-0) held a 31-27 halftime lead and began the second half on an 8-0 scoring run. Junior guard Dominique Jones led the team with 22 points and added seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Sophomore forward Augustus Gilchrist and junior forward Jarrid Famous, meanwhile, combined for 30 points and 16 rebounds, man-handling the Cavaliers (1-1) in the paint. The Bulls shot 53.3 percent from the field and held a 35 to 24 rebounding advantage against Virginia.
Though effective early with nine first half points, junior forward Mike Scott fouled out with more than eight minutes remaining in the game. This compounded Virginia's front-court problems as sophomore center Assane Sene continues to serve his three-game suspension.
Sophomore guard Sylven Landesberg was the only Cavalier to score in double figures, leading Virginia with 14 points on lackluster 5-for-24 shooting from the floor. Overall, The team shot only 32.7 percent from the field and made only 2-of-12 three-point attempts. Junior guards Jeff Jones and Mustapha Farrakhan, who combined to go 8-14 in Friday's victory against Longwood, made 4-of-19 field goal attempts yesterday.
