The Virginia men's tennis team won four titles at the UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational this past weekend. The tournament consisted of four top-A singles flights, featuring 28 ranked players and 11 who participated in the 2010 NCAA singles championships. Players from ACC schools such as North Carolina, Wake Forest, Duke, N.C. State and Maryland, as well as powerhouse tennis programs such as Tennessee, competed in the tourney.
Freshman Alex Domijan, who competed in two U.S. Open qualifying events this summer, began his career as a Cavalier with a bang, winning singles and doubles titles. Playing alongside junior Drew Courtney, who won the 2010 NCAA doubles championship with senior teammate Michael Shabaz, Domijan clinched the doubles title in the A-3 flight with a 8-5 victory against the Wake Forest duo of senior Jon Wolff and sophomore Danny Kreyman. Domijan, the top-ranked freshman in the nation, proceeded to tear through the singles bracket in the A-4 flight with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against No. 36 sophomore Tripper Carleton of Wake Forest.
Senior Sanam Singh enjoyed similar success in his first tournament of the year. He and junior Steven Eelkman Rooda took the A-4 doubles flight, prevailing in the final match with a 17-15 tiebreaker. Singh, the No. 13-ranked singles player in the nation, followed up his doubles success with a singles title in the A-2 flight against No. 33 senior Ionut Beleleu of Oklahoma.
Virginia continues play Oct. 2 at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
