False starts

Last Saturday night was a perfect evening for football. The weather was nice. Field conditions were excellent. Virginia was competing for the ACC Coastal Division title. Scott Stadium was rockin' and rollin' and never looked better. Expectations were high.

Unfortunately, the game did not go as hoped. Still, school spirit reigned for three and a half quarters.

Then the worst happened; Virginia fans left in droves. With about seven minutes remaining, I finally heard something I had not heard all game - the opponents' band, which to this point had been drowned out by the home side. At the end of the game, what I saw was a stadium replete in the opposing school's colors. It might as well have been Lane rather than Scott Stadium.

We fans, old and young, abandoned and let down the team, the coaches and our school. Shame on us. We should resolve today that this will never happen again. Congratulations and thanks to the team and coach Mike London for a fantastic season!\n\nRod Colen\nSEAS '79
