The No. 1 Virginia men's lacrosse team defeated No. 20 Drexel 9-8 Saturday in its season opener at Vidas Field. Sophomore midfielder Rob Emery scored with just under five minutes left in the game to give the Cavaliers (1-0, 0-0 ACC) the winning goal.

This was the 12th straight year in which the two teams have opened against each other, with Virginia going 11-1 during that stretch.

Coach Dom Starsia's squad started the scoring with a goal from senior attacker Chris Bocklet three and a half minutes into the game, but Drexel (0-1. 0-0 CAA) answered with four of the next five scores to take a 4-2 lead.

Emery scored his first goal of the game just before the break to narrow the margin to 4-3 at halftime.

The third quarter produced seven combined goals, with the Cavaliers netting four against the Dragons' three. Drexel went on to score the first goal of the final quarter, but Virginia produced the final two and ultimately held on for the win.

The Dragons dominated in shots by a 41-24 margin, but the Cavaliers led in both ground balls (36-24) and face-offs won (12-9). Virginia senior goaltender Rob Fortunato had a great game in his second career start, saving 11 shots on goal.
