The No. 24 Virginia men’s cross-country team lined up alongside 26 other elite teams and emerged in eighth place at the Notre Dame Invitational last Friday in South Bend, Ind.
The Cavaliers battled not only the field, but their equipment as well. Sophomore Kyle King lost his shoe within a mile of the starting line and finished 47th. This setback took King from his familiar spot at the front of the Virginia scoring five, putting him at third among Virginia runners.
Redshirt freshman Adam Visokay did his best to make up for King’s misfortune. He took over as leader and finished the eight-kilometer race in 24:50.4, good enough for 19th place overall. Junior Drew Paisley finished 17 seconds behind Visokay in 38th place. Senior Thomas Porter and junior Jack St. Marie claimed 70th and 105th place, respectively, to round out the Cavalier five.
No. 30 Columbia won the meet with 113 points, followed by No. 7 Tulsa, No. 9 Princeton, Minnesota, No. 16 Colorado State and host No. 22 Notre Dame. Virginia finished with 279 points, just four points ahead of ninth-place Southern Utah.
The men now take nearly a month off until the ACC Championships, which start on Nov. 1.
