On the road for the second week in a row, the Virginia volleyball team split a pair of ACC matches this weekend. After falling to rival Maryland 3-1, the team earned a comeback win against Pittsburgh 3-2.
The weekend started for the Cavaliers (9-7, 2-2 ACC) with a Friday night match against the Terrapins (10-6, 2-2 ACC). The competition marked Virginia’s last trip to College Park for a conference game, as Maryland joins the Big Ten next season.
Although the Cavaliers claimed the first set 21-25, the Terrapins won the match after taking the next three 25-21, 25-14 and 25-21. Maryland had 18 blocks to Virginia’s four, dominating at the net. Junior Mallory Woolridge had a team-high .444 hitting percentage, registering nine kills with only one error.
Returning to action the following night, the Cavaliers battled the Panthers (11-6, 3-1 ACC) for the first time as conference foes. Virginia won the first frame 25-22, but Pitt took the next two 20-25 and 17-25 to move within one set of a victory. The Cavaliers fought back, though, taking the fourth set 25-21 and fifth set 15-11 to win their second ACC match of the year. In doing so, Virginia also reached a new milestone: winning multiple road conference matches for the first time since 2010.
Senior Emily Rottman tallied 27 digs on the night, becoming just the fourth Cavalier to record more than 1,500 digs in a career. Freshman Haley Kole led the team with 19 kills and Woolridge made a team-best six blocks.
The team comes home next weekend, hosting ACC opponents Syracuse and Boston College on Friday and Saturday nights, respectively. Virginia has the chance to move above .500 in conference play for the first time since 2007.
