Digital technology has made it easier than ever to publicize an opinion. As you probably know, The Cavalier Daily’s website is a forum to do just that. Commenting on articles facilitates a welcome discussion among readers, and in the case of our Opinion columns, our writers. Your comments give us constructive feedback on our articles, offer viewpoints opposing our editorial content and stimulate debate among readers on important issues. But such conversation is only productive if it is civil and focuses on the topic at hand. The Cavalier Daily’s comment policy exists to make sure that these standards are upheld.
Our comment policy prohibits any comments that are obscene, defamatory, demeaning or harassing, among other things. The Cavalier Daily removes any comments that do not follow the policy, not because we aim to stifle debate, but rather because we aim to encourage it. Vitriolic comments that attack or harass will likely discourage other readers from expressing their opinions, for fear of being victimized or defamed.
The Cavalier Daily also welcomes alternative opinions in the form of guest columns or letters to the editor. This week we have published a variety of responses to Thomas Forman’s Feb. 17 guest column, “Not up for debate.” We seek to incorporate diverse ideas and perspectives, but in order to continue to do that, we must maintain an environment in which debates are courteous and respectful.
Some of our readers may prefer to respond immediately by posting a comment, rather than submitting a guest column to be put through the editing and publication process. We aim to stimulate both methods of expression. But in order to for both to continue, we must reserve the right to eliminate comments that do not follow our policy.
To utilize The Cavalier Daily’s website for expression is a privilege which can be revoked. A user will be prohibited from further participation if he or she repeatedly violates the stipulated rules. That being said, these rules are not difficult to follow. We sincerely hope that all of our readers who wish to comment will uphold them. This policy exists not only for us — to maintain our reputation as a publication by eliminating any libelous claims — but also for you, the readers. Maintaining tactful discussion will encourage more to participate in this marketplace of ideas that we serve to promulgate and uphold.
