The No. 12 Virginia men’s golf team finished in sixth place Tuesday at inaugural the Primland Collegiate Invitational. Through the two-day, 54-hole tournament, the Cavaliers shot a 19-under 845.
Host team No. 23 Wake Forest came away in first place with a 38-under 826, edging out runner up No. 17 Auburn by a single shot. No. 68 Penn State rounded out the top-3, shooting a 26-under 838.
For Virginia, sophomore Jimmy Stanger led the way, finishing 15th at 6-under 210. After opening with a 4-over 76 in the first round, Stanger shot scores of 5-under 67 in each the second and third rounds en route to posting the best 54-hole total of his career. He has now finished tops on the team in two events this fall, having placed highest among all Cavaliers at the Northern Intercollegiate to open the season.
Sophomore Derek Baird, who led Virginia through 36 holes, and junior Nick McLaughlin tied at 18th on the leaderboard a shot back from Stanger at 5-under 211. Having helped Team USA to victory at the World Amateur Championship earlier in September, senior Denny McCarthy placed 33rd at 1-over 217, while junior Kyle Kochevar finished a shot ahead in 30th with an even par 216.
In just his third collegiate tournament, freshman William Register of North Carolina placed first among all individuals, shooting a 17-under 199.
The Cavaliers are back in action Oct. 10-12 at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Johnson City, Tennessee.
