Rowing team hosts annual Rivanna Romp

Cavaliers look to close fall season strong against

The Virginia women’s rowing team wraps up the fall season Sunday with its annual home regatta, the Rivanna Romp. Teams from Louisville, Penn, Old Dominion, Columbia, Oklahoma, Duke and Clemson will travel to Charlottesville to compete in the event. The Cavaliers won both the Varsity Eight and Varsity Four races last year and will field several boats in both races again this year.

“Our goal is to just race as well and as hard as we can, twice in both eights and fours,” Coach Sauer said.

Since their second-place finish at the Princeton Chase last month, the Cavaliers have been taking advantage of the last few weeks they can row outside.

“We’ve been working on consistency from practice to practice,” junior Chelsea Adams said. “That’s being on our game every single time — if we have a bad piece, the next day we try to make sure we don’t have a bad piece.”

The lineups have also shifted significantly, and are never set in stone. Junior Sam Casto, who transferred to Virginia last spring, rowed in the first eight at the Chase, and Adams was in the five seat of the second eight.

“Since Princeton Chase, we’ve gotten back in small boats — pairs and fours — to stress individual accountability,” Sauer said.

After this regatta, the Cavaliers will have a long winter training season to prepare for spring competition, which consists of sprint races rather than the fall season's head races.

“I’d like for the final race to be something that we leave the water proud of, something that just catapults us into the spring season, but more importantly the winter training,” Adams said.

Having the winter season to prepare, though frustrating for a team itching to get back to the water, will be an important opportunity for the squad to prepare.

“We’re all rowers, and we love rowing, not necessarily being indoors, but the winter gives us a good base so that we can just hit the ground running in the spring,” Castro said.

But the Cavaliers must first get past their competition Sunday and end the season on a strong note.

“I expect everyone to bring their A game,” Sauer said. “It’s the last race of the fall, people are coming here because they want to see other good teams.”

The regatta will be at the Rivanna Reservoir in Earlysville. The Varsity Eights race will begin at 9 a.m. and the Varsity Fours are set for 10:30 a.m.
