No. 3 Florida State held Virginia to just five runs over the course of the weekend.

Virginia and No. 3 Florida State squared off for the first time since 2017 at Disharoon Park this past weekend. Florida State (35-3, 8-1 ACC) scored 33 runs in three games, holding the Cavaliers (16-17, 5-7 ACC) to a five-run total for the weekend. Virginia is now 5-7 in ACC play.

Game 1: Virginia - 0, Florida State - 11

Florida State defeated Virginia in a five-inning shutout to open the series Friday night. Senior pitcher Allyson Frei took the loss, giving up five hits and six runs to Florida State in her two innings on the mound.

The Seminoles scored early in the first. After two consecutive walks, junior center fielder Dani Morgan doubled to right center to score a pair of runs. Florida State continued the drive in the following inning, scoring four more on four hits, including two doubles, to make it a 6-0 game in the second inning.

In the fourth, the Seminoles continued the drive. Senior first baseman Carsyn Gordon hit a three-run shot to right center off of Virginia senior pitcher Erika Osherow, putting Florida State in double digits. One more run came in the top of the fifth on a fielder’s choice.

Virginia had three hits for the day but was unable to produce any runs. Osherow hit a double in the bottom of the first but was left stranded in scoring position. Sophomore third baseman Hayley Busby came up with her 11th double of the season and freshman left fielder Tori Gilbert offered a hit in the second.

Game 2: Virginia - 2, Florida State - 8

Both teams remained scoreless until the fourth inning. Florida State scored two runs, leading the inning with a double followed by a home run by sophomore right fielder Elizabeth Mason to make it a 2-0 game. Virginia answered back in the bottom of the inning when senior catcher Olivia Gott homered to center to put Virginia within one run of the Seminoles.

Florida State scored another pair of runs in the sixth inning. A single and double combined with a walk to give the Seminoles a 4-1 lead. The team continued the drive in the next inning to score four more and take a six-run lead over the Cavaliers. After freshman pitcher Aly Rayle retired two hitters at the start of the seventh, Frei came in, and Florida State’s Mason hit her second home run of the day. Following the home run, Frei gave up a double, a triple and another double to allow another two to cross home.

Senior first baseman Lacy Smith came up with Virginia’s other run with a solo shot over the left field fence, her 13th home run of the season.

Game 3: Virginia - 3, Florida State - 16

The Seminoles took no time in taking to the board, scoring three runs in the first off of freshman pitcher Clare Zureich. Morgan came up with a clutch double to right center that scored three. In the second, they added five more off senior pitcher Tabby Dabney, who came in to replace Zureich at the start of the inning. Florida State capitalized on four singles and a double to extend the lead to eight runs.

In the third, Virginia made two errors that allowed Gordon to drive in a pair of runs with a home run to right center. The drive continued in the next inning, with a leadoff double, two home runs and a single combined with two Virginia errors to give Florida State an impressive 15-run total after just four innings.

Virginia scored a pair of runs when Gott hit a two-run home run to right center, her second in two days. Freshman pinch hitter Abigail Barber singled in the final inning and eventually scored on an error, but the game ended in a five-inning run-rule.

Virginia plays in Lynchburg Tuesday where they will face Liberty University at 6 p.m.
