This is the tenth community alert of the fall semester and the first in October, following a prowling incident reported on Sept. 29.

The Charlottesville Police Department is investigating a series of reports of a male peering into windows of residences in the area of Price and Piedmont Avenues between Oct. 9 and Thursday, according to a community alert sent out by Tim Longo, chief of the University Police Department and associate vice president for safety and security.

These incidents occurred between 9:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. The subject is described as tall, with fair complexion and dark hair.

This is the tenth community alert of the fall semester and the first in October, following a prowling incident reported on Sept. 29. This is also the first reported case of a “peeping Tom” incident.

Following concerns among parents and community members over safety at the University, UPD announced a new unit called the Community Oriented Policing Squad — or “COPS” — which will focus on increasing safety near the Corner and in neighborhoods closest to Grounds. The increased presence of police on and around Grounds has drawn increasing criticism from students.

“Community alerts” are shared with the University community when there is sufficient and timely information that can be released to the community without compromising any on-going investigations. “Timely warnings” are sent when crimes committed pose an “on-going threat” to the safety of the community.”

The general public may opt-in to receive emergency alerts — urgent warnings of an imminent threat on Grounds — by texting “UVA” to 226787.

Anyone with information related to these incidents should contact the Charlottesville Police at 434-970-3280.

Update: In a correction email from Longo it was clarified that the event 2300 block of Price Avenue and the 100 block of Piedmont Avenue N.
