A University emergency alert sent Friday at 10:50 a.m. reported a bomb threat at Edgar Shannon Library, located at 160 McCormick Road. The notification said to avoid the area.

According to the latest notification sent by the University at 12:19 p.m., police remain on scene investigating. Both Shannon and Clemons Libraries have been evacuated, and the alert says University operations remain normal outside of those libraries. The alert also says the next update will be in 30 minutes, as the previous update at 11:49 a.m. had stated.

At 11:28 a.m., an alert from the University said police are investigating the scene, and in addition, the alert says to continue avoiding both Shannon and Clemons Libraries.

Shannon Library was first reported as being evacuated according to a notification sent at 10:59 a.m., and at 11:14 a.m., an alert to the University community said that University Police are at the scene investigating, and students should evacuate both Clemons and Shannon Libraries.

According to the University Police Department, all further information will come out of the University’s Communication’s Office when it can be provided. At this time, the threat is still being assessed, according to UPD.

“The University is asking for some manpower at Shannon Library,” the Charlottesville, Albemarle and U.Va. Police scanner reported at 11:10 a.m. “It doesn’t matter if they are plain clothes or in uniform.”

According to a statement sent to The Cavalier Daily from University Spokesperson Bethanie Glover at 11:29 a.m., police are responding to the threat and a “thorough investigation” is underway. She wrote the area should continue to be avoided.

Some University courses have been cancelled or moved to an online format to accommodate the ongoing threat.

The University community received an emergency alert for a false report of an active shooter on Grounds Nov. 3, 2025. The alert contained the language “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT” — language not included in the bomb threat report.
