The Honor Committee met Sunday at their weekly general body meeting to discuss their upcoming finals outreach events and held an election for the vice chair for the graduate community role, a position that was previously vacant since the term began April 6. Sahasra Molletti, co-chair for the Faculty Advisory Committee, Batten representative and second-year College student, was elected to serve as the new vice chair for the graduate community for the term. The two previously vacant School of Nursing representative spots were filled by second-year Nursing student Catherine Chen and first-year Nursing student Helina Worku.
The Committee also discussed their upcoming finals pushes, which are outreach initiatives held during the final exam period for the student body. These events are organized by the Committee representatives from their respective schools. School representatives outlined the events they hope to put on and strategies of how to engage with students while supporting them through exams. During the meeting, each of the representatives presented their final ideas before submitting their orders for supplies they will need for their events during the week of exams.
Third-year Architecture Rep. Andy Lin shared ideas for having a “Lunch and Learn” with food catering from Playa Bowls and a potential tabling opportunity for Architecture students to engage with Committee representatives.
Kayla Kim, chair of the data and research subcommittee, Data Science representative and third-year Data Science student, proposed an event that she helped organize last semester to happen again this semester. The event was titled “Snacks and Snuggles,” and the Committee gave out snacks to students from the School of Data Science and brought Toby the therapy dog from Student Health and Wellness to offer emotional support for Data Science students.
Along with outlining the Committee’s plans for the upcoming examination period, Freed highlighted three main goals to achieve in the new term. According to Freed, the Committee’s goals for the new term include strengthening the University’s community of trust through outreach, focusing on the community within the Committee and working with faculty to better understand how the Honor process works.
Freed expanded on the Committee’s approach of faculty relations and making sure that the Committee’s materials are easily understood to explain the processes of potential honor sanctions and whether to report a decision in different circumstances.
“I think there are a lot of faculty that still haven’t reported under multi-sanction and aren’t totally sure how that process works,” Freed said. “I think as much as possible, [we need to make] sure that our outreach materials are very digestible and very simple and to the point.”
Cody Scarce, vice chair for the undergraduate community and third-year College student, expanded on the goal of strengthening the community within the Committee and said he hoped to shed the barrier between the Executive Committee and the support officers.
“We want to lower that barrier to entry so that way support officers are feeling well supported,” Scarce said. “I think a collaboration between [the Executive Committee] and the support officer pool would be really valuable within Honor.”
The Committee concluded the meeting with a workshop session to finalize the Committee’s outreach initiatives during final exams before proceeding into a closed session election of the vice chair for the graduate community position — won by Molletti.
The Committee will hold its final meeting of the school year Sunday and will continue to hold monthly summer meeting sessions Sundays at 7 p.m. via Zoom.
