The NCAA has stripped away national titles, repossessed Heisman trophies and vacated wins. It has slapped schools with sanctions for recruiting violations, academic misconduct and even handed down the "Death Penalty" to Southern Methodist University during the 1987 season. But it has never, ever doled out losses to both participants of a college football game.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Virginia football team kept the nation's most accurate passer in check for long stretches at Chapel Hill Saturday, but sophomore quarterback Bryn Renner's efficiency proved contagious for the rest of the North Carolina offense. B.J. Stith, the son of Cavalier basketball great Bryant Stith, verbally committed to join the Virginia basketball program Saturday, The Daily Progress reported. Stith, a 6-foot-5 high-school sophomore, plays guard for his father at Brunswick High in Lawrenceville, Va.. The team won the state championship during Stith's freshman year after four years of consecutive losses in the championship game. Stith attended the Cavalier football team's home win against William & Mary and decided to give an early verbal commitment to men's basketball coach Tony Bennett before the opening kickoff. He would attend his father's alma mater as a member of the 2014 recruiting class - potentially alongside his brother, Brandan, a 6-foot-6 junior forward at Brunswick who is also considering Virginia. Bryant Stith, who starred for Virginia from 1989 to 1992, finished as the leading scorer in program history with 2,516 career points and led Virginia to three NCAA tournaments and the 1992 NIT Championship. While the Virginia football team has struggled to make its mark in the win column during the past three losing seasons, the Cavaliers, nevertheless, have continued to churn out plenty of NFL-caliber players. Offensive linemen like Eugene Monroe, Branden Albert, D'Brickashaw Ferguson and even tight end Heath Miller have dominated Virginia's draft day headlines during the last five years, but the backfield behind the big uglies upfront hasn't enjoyed consecutive years with a 1,000-yard, 10-touchdown tailback in more than a decade. Thomas Jones last accomplished the feat during the 1998 and 1999 seasons and Tiki Barber did the same in 1995 and 1996, but the Cavaliers have not since come close to matching the quality and consistency of the running game during the two NFL stars' respective collegiate careers.

For as long as I can remember, my mom has scolded me for flipping straight to the sports section of every newspaper I've ever picked up. Her well-intentioned words urging me to be more informed about the "real, important things in life" may have fallen on deaf ears, but the concept of being "too invested" in sports admittedly intrigues me. I'm almost inclined to agree with critics of the mind-numbing importance our country places on sports - which ostensibly is "just a game." The glorification of athletic endeavors at the expense of education and other important professional and personal pursuits certainly can damage a sports fan's sense of perspective - as evidenced by the results of SportsNation-type polls judging whether more Americans can correctly identify Muammar Gaddafi or Jimmer Fredette. A life lived solely according to the Gospel of ESPN obviously is as unfulfilling as it is unrealistic; nevertheless, passionate sports fandom is far from the frivolous or shallow human experience that its cynical critics suggest.
