American Academy inducts Casteen, faculty members

University President John T. Casteen, III and three faculty members were inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences on Saturday. The AAAS has honored excellence and service to the nation and the world since 1780, according to the organization's Web site, electing members who are "men and women of exceptional achievement, drawn from science, scholarship, business, public affairs, and the arts." This year, in addition to Casteen, the AAAS inducted Law Prof.

Poe House pays tribute to author with funeral

One of the University's most famous alumni was buried Sunday. Again. The Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum honored author and former University student Edgar Allan Poe with a funeral in Baltimore 160 years after his death, said event organizer and Poe House Curator Jeff Jerome.

Honor discusses Semester at Sea

Honor Chair David Truetzel presented a proposal at last night's Honor Committee meeting that would give expelled Semester at Sea students the right to request a new trial if found guilty of an academic honor offense during the program.

University receives B- grade for sustainability efforts

The University received an overall B- grade on the Sustainable Endowments Institute's College Sustainability Report Card for 2010, slipping slightly from last year's B. SEI is the only independent evaluator of sustainability policies at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, SEI spokesperson Lea Lupkin said. The organization published profiles for 332 schools, which each responded to at least one survey evaluating cooperative green strategies in nine "indicator" categories: administration, climate change & energy, food & recycling, green building, transportation, student involvement, endowment transparency, shareholder engagement and investment priorities.

Council issues apologetic resolution

The Charlottesville City Council unanimously passed a resolution Monday apologizing for its role in the Massive Resistance, an effort to keep Virginia schools segregated in the 1950s. The resolution will open several discussions and help rebuild some trust in the community, Charlottesville Mayor Dave Norris said. "All of this is a precursor to dialogue on race," Norris said.
