Haiti relief groups reach $100,000 goal

Although several months have passed since the 7.0-magnitude earthquake devastated Haiti in January, the island nation is still very much on the minds of University faculty, staff and students. Hoos for Haiti, a University-wide fundraising campaign, reached its semester's fundraising goal of $100,000 this past weekend.

Council appoints interim manager

City Council unanimously voted to elect Maurice Jones Acting City Manager at a meeting last night. Jones, who currently serves as Assistant City Manager, will serve as interim manager after current City Manager Gary O'Connell steps down April 12 after 15 years of service. Council members expressed confidence in Maurice's ability to replace O'Connell, who was recently appointed to be the next head of the Albemarle County Service Authority.

Capital campaign remains on track despite economy

Despite the increasingly troubled economic climate, the University?s ?Knowledge is Power? capital campaign remains on track, said Alison Traub, assistant vice president for development and director of the campaign.The University started the campaign in 2006 with an original goal of raising $3 billion during the course of three years, $1.865 billion of which already has been met through gifts and pledges, Traub said.

Students aid admissions office during Winter Break

While some University students spent Winter Break recovering from the busy fall semester, others volunteered their time to help University admissions officials sort through thousands of pieces of mail from prospective students.

Engineering organization deemed

The University?s chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers was named an outstanding student chapter for 2008 by the nationwide organization.?Every year our student chapters committee awards recognition to a handful of student chapters based on their level of participation,? explained Gordon Ellis, head of student awards at AIChE, an organization that aims to advance the practice and theory of chemical engineering.

Business schools see increase in applications

Business schools have seen a sharp increase in the number of applicants since 2005, according to a recent Kaplan, Inc. survey, which is a trend that may continue during the national economic downturn, experts say.?The applications to business schools are on the rise,? said Dan LeClair, vice president & chief knowledge officer for Assocation to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International, adding that many speculators think it is due in part to the uncertainty of the economy.Liza Weale, director of graduate programs for Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions, noted that interest in graduate degrees generally rises during market downturns.
