Women's hoops loses on road to Blue Devils

With one game left in conference play, the Virginia women's basketball team's roller coaster season experienced another low at Cameron Indoor Stadium last night.

Virginia lost, 76-53, to Duke (24-3, 12-3 ACC) and remains in fifth place in the ACC.

In Blue Devil coach Gail Goestenkors' 200th career victory, Georgia Schweitzer led No. 7 Duke with 19 points and seven rebounds. Blue Devil point guard Sheana Mosch contributed 17 points.

The Cavaliers (17-12, 7-8) shot just 29.8 percent from the field and were out-rebounded, 38-30. Virginia was only 2-for-14 from behind the arc.

Cavalier forward Schuye LaRue was once again the lone bright star for Virginia. She scored 16 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, but also had nine turnovers.

The Cavaliers fell to Duke, 71-68, at University Hall on Jan. 22.

Virginia's final regular season game will be at home against Florida State Sunday at 7 p.m.

Awarding academics

Three Virginia field hockey players were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association National Academic Squad yesterday.

Seniors Becky Worthington and Kristy Sott and junior Carrie Goodloe are all repeat winners of the award.

Worthington, the Cavaliers' starting goalkeeper, is a three-time All-ACC Tournament selection and ranks sixth in Cavalier history with 311 saves.

Sott, a back, ranks seventh on the Virginia career scoring list with 96 points.

Midfielder Goodloe led the team this season with 15 assists, giving her 39 in her career. She ranks third on the Virginia career assist list.
