Women's lacrosse garners preseaon No. 7 in ranking

InsideLacrosse ranked the Virginia women's lacrosse team No. 7 in its preseason poll. Last season, the Cavaliers advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive time before falling to James Madison, 12-5.

Virginia opens its 2001 regular season at William & Mary on Feb. 28.

Battier hits the roof

Last night, Duke senior forward Shane Battier became the 10th Blue Devil player to have his jersey hang from the rafters at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The "Retirement Day" ceremony preceded Duke's 94-58 win over Georgia Tech. Battier scored 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds against the Yellow Jackets last night.

    Battier's number 31 joins Dick Groat (10), Art Heyman (25), Jeff Mullins (44), Mike Gminski (43), Johnny Dawkins (24), Danny Ferry (35), Christian Laettner (32), Bobby Hurley (11) and Grant Hill (33) as retired Blue Devil jerseys.

    This season, Battier is averaging 19.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 2.1 steals and 2.1 blocked shots per game.

    Battier is a leading candidate to collect national player of the year, national defensive player of the year, All-America and Academic All-America honors this season.

    Stork delivers

    Maryland's Jake Stork earned ACC Wrestler of the Week honors after winning all three of his matches last week and leading the Terrapins to victory in two of three matches.

    A sophomore from Mohrsville, Pa., Stork began the week by pinning Virginia's Jimi Massey in 1 minute, 29 seconds on Valentine's Day in a 15-20 loss to the Cavaliers. In a 33-15 win over Howard on Feb. 16, Stork pinned James Blanton in 1:16. That same day, Stork pinned Old Dominion's Matt Small in 4:00 as Maryland cruised to a 28-12 victory.

    Stork's 12 falls lead the Maryland squad. He is 23-6 overall with a 4-0 mark in ACC competition.
