ACC honors Dennis with softball award

Junior first baseman/pitcher Kristen Dennis garnered ACC Player of the Week honors after leading the Virginia softball team to the Winthrop Invitational Tournament title on Sunday in Rock Hill, S.C.

The Cavaliers (22-8) advanced to the championship game of the tournament after dispatching East Carolina, 10-5, in the semifinals. Behind Dennis' pitching, Virginia defeated Illinois 6-1 in the final game.

The Cavaliers, winners of 18 of their last 20 games, also finished second at the Coastal Carolina University Softball Classic on March 14. After beating Illinois, 4-0, in the semifinals, Virginia dropped a 4-0 decision to East Carolina in the title game.

Dennis went 3-0 last week with one save. In four outings, three of which were complete games, she pitched 22 innings, struck out 32, walked three and gave up just three runs on 15 hits.

For the season, Dennis is 7-3 with one save and a 1.07 ERA. In 65.2 innings, she issued only 11 walks and struck out 94.

Dennis also delivered on the offensive end. Her .417 batting average leads all ACC players (35 hits in 84 at bats), and she also leads the league in on-base percentage (.520) and slugging percentage (.845).

Virginia hosts Liberty, Bowling Green and Penn State in the U.Va. Who's Hoo Classic at The Park in Charlottesville this weekend.
