Women's hoops loses in NCAA tourney opener

Eighth-seeded Michigan overcame a 17-point deficit Saturday to score an overtime win over ninth-seeded Virginia, 81-71, in the first round of the Women's NCAA Basketball Tournament in South Bend, Ind. Virginia sophomore Schuye LaRue nailed a three-pointer with 5.9 seconds left in the game to force a tie, but Michigan cruised through overtime by scoring the first seven points and hitting 6 of 9 free throws. The win marked the eighth time this season that the Wolverines (19-11) have battled back after trailing at halftime.

LaRue led Virginia with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Cavalier junior guard Telisha Quarles added 19 points, and sophomore forward Marcie Dickson scored 14. The Cavaliers finished their season with an 18-14 overall record.

Track and field wins 21 events

Junior Brian Kollar obliterated the old ACC javelin record by almost a meter at the Cape Fear Classic in Wilmington this weekend. Kollar threw 74.22 meters, besting the 8-year-old ACC record and his own Virginia record. The throw earned Kollar first place and automatically qualifies him for the NCAA Championships, where he finished second last year. Junior John Welch finished second in the event with a throw of 69.10 meters, which provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA meet.

All three wrestlers dropped their first-round decisions but Alexander bounced back and defeated Princeton's Juan Venturi, 20-12, and Oregon State's Ben Richards, 12-7, before falling to Pittsburgh's Rob Loper, 7-2. Loper entered the tournament seeded sixth.

The Virginia men's lacrosse team ended its three-game losing streak at Klšckner Stadium on Sunday with a 15-5 win over Denver in the two teams' first-ever meeting. The win bumps Virginia's season record to 2-3.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-1 lead, but freshman Justin Mullen brought the Cavaliers even with 1:28 left in the opening period. Mullen's goal launched a string of nine unanswered Virginia goals. Senior Hanley Holcomb led the team with four goals, tying his career high. Jon Focht, Billy Glading, A.J. Shannon and Ian Shure added two goals apiece for Virginia. Cav freshman goalie Tillman Johnson played the entire game for Virginia and tied his career high with 12 saves.

    Women's lacrosse falls to Tigers

Sisters Lacey and Lauren Aumiller combined for five of Virginia women's lacrosse team's six goals, but it was not enough to top No. 6 Princeton at University Hall Turf Field on Sunday. The No. 9 Cavaliers dropped the decision to the Tigers, 9-6.

The score was knotted at thre apiece until Princeton's Whitney Miller scored with 2:43 in the half to give the Tigers a lead they would not relinquish.

Princeton opened the second half with four goals in 10 minutes, but the Cavaliers answered with goals from Lauren and Lacey Aumiller that put Virginia within three. Princeton scored with 8:37 to play, however, and killed Virginia's rally. Lauren Aumiller scored one final goal with 4:54 remaining, but it was not enough.

The Cavaliers play the Tar Heels at Chapel Hill on Saturday at 1 p.m.
