Rugby Road shuts down due to a leaking attic in Kappa Kappa Gamma
A leak in the auxiliary drain located in the attic of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority house, located at 503 Rugby Road, caused the busy street to shut down yesterday at 1:20 p.m.
"It looked a lot worse than it was," said Charlottesville Fire Dept. Capt. W.A. Hogsten.
The Charlottesville Fire Dept. closed two blocks of the street for about 45 minutes to one hour.
"It appeared to be a gas leak," Hogsten said.
According to Hogsten, the water leaking from the drain had a sulfur smell, thus prompting the suspicion of a more dangerous leak.
Officials decided to evacuate the house before discovering the true reason for the smell.
Two of the rooms in the house incurred damage because of the leaks, but for the most part the building was spared from serious harm.
The leak "was cut off just in time," Hogsten said. "There was no significant damage."
Electrical items were removed from the rooms before water could do damage, he added.
University Transit System immediately was notified by the fire department when they decided to block the road, Hogsten said.
According to Hogsten, UTS has a contingency plan for routes that are blocked off.
Because only a few blocks were closed yesterday, students were dropped off only one block further than usual, he added.
It was "not that much of an inconvenience," he said.
