Borski scores two as Virginia women's soccer upsets No. 14 Demon Deacons
The Cavaliers recorded a 2-1 victory over ACC rival Wake Forest on Saturday night at Winston-Salem. The win marks the first time Virginia has beaten a ranked opponent. Their win improves Virginia's record to 9-5-2 (2-3 ACC).
Senior forward Darci Borski gave Virginia the early lead off a deflected cross by sophomore forward Lindsay Gusick. Wake Forest would counter less than three minutes later to tie the game.
The second half saw an increased Cavalier offensive effort. Junior forward Sarah Lane's through ball would lead to Borski's second goal on the night at the 53rd minute and sealed the Cavalier victory.
Virginia hosts N.C. State onWednesday night.
Cavalier volleyball comes up empty on weekend road trip
Virginia (7-19, 1-9 ACC) could not improve its ACC record this weekend, dropping 3-0 decisions to Georgia Tech and Clemson. The Friday night match against Georgia Tech saw sophomore middle Alexis Geocaris hit 12 kills and a match-high .476 hitting percentage along with five blocks, five digs, and the lone Cavalier service ace. Junior outside hitter Paige Davis would contribute to the offense with nine kills, eight digs and four blocks. Sophomore setter Lily Phillips came close to a double-double with 28 assists and nine digs. But the offensive effort was not enough -- Georgia Tech hit .323 with 52 kills against Virginia's .115 and 36 kills.
The next night at Clemson, Geocaris again recorded 12 kills. Junior middle Shannon Boyle joined Geocaris as the only other Cavalier to reach double figures with 10 kills, hitting .321. Davis also registered nine kills, adding eight digs and three blocks. For the second night in a row, Phillips would fall just shy of a double-double with 38 assists and nine digs.
Virginia will host Duke Tuesday night at University Hall.
