Dennis Womack, Virginia's head baseball coach, will be stepping down from his post next season after being the focal point of the University's program for 23 years. Womack will become an assistant athletic director in the University athletic department where he will help with facilities management and operations of the various sports teams.
"I wasn't sure how much longer I was going to coach and I believe the timing is right for me to take this step," Womack said in a release. "This was a very difficult position, but I feel it's the right decision at this time."
"As our baseball coach, Dennis has worked diligently to filed competitive teams," Virginia Athletics Director Craig Littlepage said in a release. "Dennis is well-respected within the University community and I'm pleased he has agreed to rejoin our administrative team on a full time basis."
Over his tenure as the leader of Virginia baseball, Womack compiled an overall record of 594-605-7 while leading the Cavaliers to a record of 29-25 (11-12 ACC) this season. Womack coached three All-Americans, three Academic All-Americans, and had 40 players selected in the Major League Baseball draft while at Virginia. As for career highs, Womack was named ACC Baseball Coach of the Year in 1985 and won the ACC championship in 1996.
"One of the things that made this decision so difficult was this year's team," Womack said. "They are a special group with ability and a tremendous work ethic."
As for the future of Virginia baseball, Womack sees it filled with opportunity and talent.
"I believe I'm leaving our program in a very competitive position, given the many returning players and a solid incoming class of first-years and transfers," Womack said.
A replacement has not been named to take over the reigns of the program but the Athletic department has all ready begun a search for Womack's successor.
