On the wrong road to diversity

The road to hell, so a parable runs, is paved with good intentions. At a university so saturated with racial tensions, any attempt to mitigate them must be, at least initially, greeted eagerly. As is so often the case, however, these so-called solutions end up succumbing to their own inadequacies. The latest such proposal -- a commission consisting of The Cavalier Daily and the Black Student Alliance -- is no different, and without diligence and skepticism we might approach a road not worth taking.

This commission, which itself deserves some explanation, was conceived a few years ago and recently implemented between the Managing Board of The Cavalier Daily and the Black Student Alliance. The purpose being, as its charter says, "to improve the quality of The Cavalier Daily." More specifically, as it announces in its mission statement, the commission was formed "in an attempt to address the long-standing tensions between the African-American community and The Cavalier Daily
