After a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory against Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals, the No. 24 Virginia men's soccer team had plenty of momentum, but little energy left in its legs. Friday night - three days after their hard-fought battle with the Demon Deacons - the Cavaliers faced top ACC seed No. 3 North Carolina. In another match that came down to the wire, Virginia came up short with a 1-0 loss in its second straight overtime game.
The Cavaliers (12-7-1) contained the Tar Heels (16-2-2) for 90 minutes of regulation before breaking down during the second minute of the extra session. Freshman goalkeeper Spencer LaCivita kept the Cavaliers alive with six saves, but redshirt junior forward Billy Schuler finally broke the deadlock on a play set up by sophomore forward Rob Lovejoy.
North Carolina outshot Virginia 22-4 and held a 7-0 advantage in shots on goal. The Tar Heels advanced to play seventh-seeded Boston College in Sunday's final, which North Carolina won 3-1.
Virginia senior defender Hunter Jumper and sophomore forward Brian Span were named to the ACC All-Tournament team. The NCAA draw will be announced today at 4:30 p.m.
