As preparation begins for the great Thursday night migration from first-year dorms to Rugby Road, third-year College student Joanna Currey gets ready for a different sort of weekend kickstarter.
Each Thursday at 8 p.m., Eunoia, a creative Christian community that is housed in The Garden building at the intersection of Brandon and Jefferson Park avenues, opens its doors for a swath of musical and artistic talent. The event provides an opportunity to mingle with fellow Wahoos and come across a surprisingly powerful set of artistic talent.
Currey is a frequent performer at the event. Though often a singer, Currey recited poetry this past week, numbering among the multitude of acts which took The Garden stage. Including several American Idol-worthy vocal talents and a host of original songs, the performances were gripping and inspiring.
Once the open mic ended, audience members could stay for an additional treat: a performance by folk musician Jacob Johnson. Though not every week offers a performance by a professional, each night truly embodies the spirit of an open mic performance: the audience is never quite sure what to expect.
The event is quickly becoming my favorite weekly activity — even as someone who would never dare take the stage. Supporters are always welcome, and aspiring musicians are obviously encouraged. The community of each performance is supportive, with alumni and fellow students cheering on friends and strangers alike.
Though perhaps not a traditional substitute for a night down Rugby, the sheer talent combined with the calm and friendly atmosphere make Eunoia’s open mic nights more than worthwhile.
