When Tennessee senior guard Antonio Barton hit a half-court 3-pointer as time expired in the first half, it epitomized the Virginia men’s basketball team’s night. The Volunteers shot the lights out Monday in Knoxville, trouncing the Cavaliers 87-52 and dealing the team its worst defeat since falling to No. 11 Washington 106-63 Nov. 22, 2010.
Virginia (9-4) never led in its final non-conference game. The Volunteers (8-4) raced out to a 27-11 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game behind 15 points from junior guard Josh Richardson, on a perfect 6-of-6 mark from the field and 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. Richardson finished with 20 points.
Sophomore guard Justin Anderson led Virginia in scoring for the third consecutive game with 11 points, while sophomore forward Mike Tobey scored 10 points — the only other Cavalier in double figures.
Although the Cavaliers fared dismally on offense, shooting 32.7 percent from the field and 16.7 percent from 3-point range, Monday featured an uncharacteristically poor performance from the team’s defense. The team gave up a season-high 87 points and 61.1 percent 3-point percentage.
Senior guard Jordan McRae led the Volunteers with 21 points and five assists, while junior forward Jarnell Stokes also tallied 20 points, shooting 12-of-14 from the free-throw line. It was the first time three players scored 20 points or more against the Cavaliers since a Liberty team featuring Seth Curry did it Nov. 25, 2008.
The Cavaliers play the second installment of their five-game road trip Saturday, when they open up conference play in Tallahassee, Fla. against Florida State (9-3). Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
