After taking a nearly month-long hiatus, the Virginia swimming and diving teams returned to competition this past weekend at the Georgia Fall Invitational in Athens, Ga. Together, the men’s and women’s teams combined for 12 event wins and broke six school records.
The No. 1 Cavalier women (3-0) had perhaps their most impressive victory of the season against competitive teams. Scoring 1006.5 points, the Cavaliers triumphed over No. 3 Georgia’s 926 points, No. 20 Penn State’s 528.5 points, and No. 8 Auburn’s 330 points. On the swimming side, the Cavaliers broke records in the 200 free relay, the 200 individual medley, the 200 medley relay, the 100 fly and the 400 free relay. On the diving side, senior Becca Corbett set the school-record score of 337.5 in her victor of the 3-meter diving.
Meanwhile, the Virginia men (1-2) received fourth on the weekend with 510, placing behind No. 4 Georgia’s 939.5 points, No. 2 California’s 913 points, and No. 9 Auburn’s 833.5 points. While the men did not win any of their events, they had impressive showings from senior diver Carl Brueger and senior Yannick Kaeser—who placed second in 1-meter diving, and second in 200 breast, respectively.
The Virginia swimming and diving teams will be off for the rest of December and will resume competition on Jan. 8-9 at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville against Notre Dame.
