The No. 7 Virginia women’s tennis team played two hard-fought matches at the ITA National Team Indoors Friday and Saturday. Hosted by the Wisconsin, the tournament features many of the nation’s top teams. The Cavalier’s advanced past No. 9 Texas A&M with a 4-1 win, but fell against No. 6 California with a 4-1 defeat.
Against the Aggies, the Cavalier’s clinched victory after freshman Meghan Kelley defeated freshman Domenica Gonzalez 7-5, 6-2 in singles. Kelley also won her doubles match paired with senior Danielle Collins.
The Cavaliers were also boosted by strong singles performances by seniors Julia Elbaba and Stephanie Nauta who won 6-2, 6-4 and 6-4, 6-1, respectively.
Against California, the Golden Bears claimed the doubles point and won on courts four, five and six in singles play to pick up the victory. Junior Victoria Olivarez, freshman Erica Susi and Kelley fell in singles, showing that California appears to be very strong on the lower end of their ladder. Despite the defeat, Collins had an impressive singles victory against California’s No. 5 in junior Maegan Manasse with a score of 6-3, 6-1.
