Swimming completes season in final meet

The No. 14 men’s swim team finished its season Saturday, March 25 at the NCAA Championship meet at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis. The Cavaliers (5-2, 4-1 ACC) end the season on a high note, with many swimmers posting extremely fast times.

No. 2 Texas won the NCAA Championship meet overall for the third straight year with a score of 542. No other team was even close — second place No. 1 California finished with a score of 349.

Although Virginia did not place at the event, there are many positives to take away from the meet. Senior Austin Quinn finished 30th in the 200-yard backstroke and posted a career best time. Sophomore Zach Fong finished 31st and freshman Ted Schubert touched 32nd overall in the 200-yard butterfly, while freshman Joe Clark placed 35th in the 200-yard backstroke and freshman John Whiteside placed 36th overall at the meet.

Virginia finished the meet with the 400-yard freestyle relay. Whiteside, junior Luke Georgiadis, sophomore Bryce Keblish and senior Matt Lockman finished the day in 25th place.

Looking forward to next season, the Cavaliers have many strong pieces to build on. With many returning freshmen and sophomores, the team has a solid core of experience to work with from the very start.

Although the end of the NCAA Championship meet means swim season is finished, many swimmers will compete in other competitions throughout the year, and all will participate in off-season practice.
