The No. 19 Virginia men’s soccer team defeated Marshall 1-0 Tuesday night at Klöckner Stadium.
The lone goal of the match was scored by Virginia (2-0-2) freshman forward Cabrel Happi Kamseu in the 44th minute, the first of his collegiate career.
The Cavaliers dominated the match, outshooting Marshall (2-3-1) 12-7. Sophomore goalkeeper Colin Shutler was only required to make one save, after registering seven and eight saves in his last two outings.
Virginia opened with a very attacking lineup, including both Happi Kamseu and fellow freshman forward Daniel Steedman, who had started the previous match against Virginia Tech in place of Happi Kamseu.
The Cavaliers had two chances in the 29th minute, when sophomore winger Nathaniel Crofts had his shot saved and knocked out of play for a corner by Marshall junior goalkeeper Paulo Pita. On the ensuing corner, Pita also was able to make the save on a header by Happi Kamseu.
In the 44th minute, Kamseu received the ball near midfield and dribbled past two Marshall defenders before rocketing a shot past Pita from well outside the box.
The Virginia attack failed to put a shot on target in the second half, as the Cavaliers attempted to defend their one-goal lead.
Shutler’s sole save came in the 79th minute, but Marshall failed to register a shot on target the rest of the match.
Virginia was initially scheduled to host No. 8 Notre Dame (3-0-1) on Friday, but that match has already been postponed due to Hurricane Florence. The Cavaliers will next play Tuesday against Florida International (1-3) at home. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.
