Sophomore right wing Nathaniel Crofts will look to build off of his first collegiate goal in his matchup against the Marshall defense on Tuesday.

The No. 10 Virginia men’s soccer team will host Marshall in a non-conference matchup Tuesday.

The Cavaliers  (1-0-2) have had a relatively challenging start to their season, beating New Hampshire 1-0 before drawing 0-0 against Maryland and 1-1 against No. 21 Virginia Tech.

The Virginia defense has been strong so far this season, allowing only a first-minute goal against Virginia Tech. Freshman Aboubacar Keita, sophomore Henry Kessler and senior Prosper Figbe have played every minute at center back.

Sophomore goalkeeper Colin Shutler has made 17 saves so far this season, leading the ACC in goals against average, save percentage and saves per game. Shutler’s eight saves against Virginia Tech were the most by any Cavalier goalkeeper since 2010.

However, the Virginia attack has struggled to score goals so far this year, only managing two in three matches. The first was an unassisted, last-minute winner against New Hampshire by sophomore midfielder Joe Bell. The second was the equalizer against Virginia Tech, a cross from sophomore forward Irakoze Donasiyano headed in by sophomore forward Nathaniel Crofts —  his first career Virginia goal.

“We're on the younger side — especially as it pertains to scoring goals — and we're still trying to figure ourselves out," Virginia men’s soccer Coach George Gelnovatch said.

The Cavaliers have started a freshman at striker in all three matches, with freshman forward Cabrel Happi Kamseu starting the first two and freshman forward Daniel Steedman getting the nod against Virginia Tech.

Marshall (2-2-1) is coming off a 2-1 overtime loss to Florida International, ranked No. 20 in the preseason. The Thundering Herd are 0-5 all-time against Virginia, being outscored 16-1 in the process.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
