The No. 15 Virginia field hockey team could not pull off an upset against No. 1 North Carolina Wednesday in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Though the Cavaliers (4-5, 1-2 ACC) led UNC (9-0, 3-0 ACC) during the second half in shot attempts and penalty corners, they were unable to convert offensively against a Carolina team that has only allowed three goals this season.
North Carolina pulled ahead early with a goal by senior midfielder Malin Evert at the 5:48 mark. The Tar Heels scored again on a corner and ended the half with a 2-0 lead, while Evert tallied a second goal minutes after the start of the second half. Virginia struggled offensively through the first half, mustering a single shot by freshman midfielder Amber Ezechiels and no penalty corners.
The Cavaliers’ offense picked up in the second half, though UNC’s sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Hendry blocked all three shots on goal. Junior midfielder Erin Shanahan led the Cavaliers in shots and put up two, including a final attempt off a corner in the game’s final moments. Virginia’s senior goalkeeper Carrera Lucas, who has registered two shutout games this season, also made three saves.
Wednesday’s match was originally scheduled for Sept. 14. The game was postponed over weather concerns due to Hurricane Florence.
Virginia returns home this Saturday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. to take on No. 8 Louisville at Turf Field.
